    About Health Services

East Windsor Public School has our students, staff, and families’ health as our top priority. Our school department has a school nurse assigned in every school and available to all of our students and staff. We collaborate closely with the Community Health Center which is housed at the East Windsor High School and at Broad Brook Elementary School, and provides medical, dental and mental health care to students in the district that are signed up for their services.

EWPS nurses work with parents and school staff on attendance issues as it relates to medical issues. We provide education to students around many health issues such as vaping, smoking, safe dating, mental health self-awareness, flu, substance abuse, sex education, the food pyramid, diabetes, asthma care and allergy care. The nursing staff participates in the state asthma, immunization and school health surveys. We conduct vision, hearing and postural screenings for required grades. All nurses are part of their school’s response team and work on their school’s safety committee. Our nurses support CPR training for all coaches and staff in the district as well as training to staff on the use of Narcan. We oversee medication delegation and the use of inhalers, epipens and seizure medication. We have provided flu and COVID vaccine clinics for staff and students as well.

If you have health related concerns for your child, we encourage you to reach out to your school nurse.

    Screenings

Screenings are conducted by the Health Office staff according to the Connecticut Department of Education. If a student fails a screening, a parent/guardian notification letter is sent home requesting a follow up visit to the student’s Primary care Provider or a referral to a Specialist. Completed referral letters from physicians should be returned to the School Nurse when the referral is completed. It is very important that students who fail their screenings always have a follow up visit to their physician to ensure further treatment is not necessary. Keeping the Nursing Staff aware of any referral results is important part of the student’s health assessment.

    • Vision Screening: Performed annually on students grade PreK – 6 and grade 9.
    • Hearing Screening: Performed annually on students PreK – 3 and grades 5 and 8.
    • Postural: Performed annually on students in grades 5-9.

    Immunizations

All students must have physician proof of immunizations on file in the health office or prior to school entrance in compliance with Connecticut General Statue section 10-204.

    Physical Exams

A copy of a student’s physical exam is required upon entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th, and 10th grade. The physical exam must have been completed within a year of entrance into that grade level. Sports physicals must be completed every 13 months and on file in the health office prior to participation in any sport. Students will not be allowed to try-out for any sport without a current physical exam on record.
